Why Do We Feel Morbid Curiosity?

by Devrupa Rakshit, The Swaddle

“Even though there’s no immediate threat to an individual who is reading gore, or watching a disaster documentary, the brain still prepares for a fight-or-flight response. This causes a spike in adrenaline, endorphins and dopamine. Being in a state of alert can also make it difficult to look away from the source of horror. But, since there was never any real danger, the physical manifestations of the fear, such as faster rate of breathing, and muscle tension, soon wear off to be replaced by a positive surge of relief. This is akin to a roller coaster ride. ‘When riding a roller coaster, the rush continues after the ride is over, and it tends to intensify the positive feelings of relief,’ Professor Sparks said, explaining how euphoria follows the stress.'”

What does the Bible say about pestilence?

Psalm 91:1-16 (English Standard Version)

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, …

Luke 21:11 (English Standard Version)

There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

Revelation 6:8 (English Standard Version)

And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.

What is the history of biological warfare?

What is the history of biological warfare?

by Edmond Hooker, MD, DrPH, eMedicineHealth

“Biological weapons include any microorganism (such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi) or toxin (poisonous compounds produced by microorganisms) found in nature that can be used to kill or injure people.

The act of bioterrorism can range from a simple hoax to the actual use of these biological weapons, also referred to as agents. A number of nations have or are seeking to acquire biological warfare agents, and there are concerns that terrorist groups or individuals may acquire the technologies and expertise to use these destructive agents. Biological agents may be used for an isolated assassination, as well as to cause incapacitation or death to thousands. If the environment is contaminated, a long-term threat to the population could be created.

Attempts to use biological warfare agents date back to antiquity. Scythian archers infected their arrows by dipping them in decomposing bodies or in blood mixed with manure as far back as 400 BC. Persian, Greek, and Roman literature from 300 BC quotes examples of dead animals used to contaminate wells and other sources of water. In the Battle of Eurymedon in 190 BC, Hannibal won a naval victory over King Eumenes II of Pergamon by firing earthen vessels full of venomous snakes into the enemy ships.”

What’s the “Messiah” Complex—And Why Do People Fall For It?

by DrHurd.com

We all know it seems so crazy, right? But maybe it’s not so obvious why so many believe Sherry is the mouthpiece of God…

“Though an ultimate rescuer may be construed in many forms…magical powers are projected onto the person of the cult leader or messiah, accompanied by a surrender of one’s personal will and ego to the messianic leader and the collective needs of the cult. This gives followers of the messiah an opportunity to transcend their own individual egos and to function as part of something greater than themselves. In this sense, participants in the messiah syndrome seek spirituality, some way of transcending their sense of meaninglessness, powerlessness, helplessness, and isolation.”

Hidden Portals in Earth’s Magnetic Field

by Dr. Tony Phillips, NASA

“A favorite theme of science fiction is ‘the portal’–an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed….

It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.

‘We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions,’ explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. ‘They’re places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun’s atmosphere 93 million miles away.'”

Perceived power

Perceived power

by Dr. Simon Moss, SICO TESTS

“Power is sometimes defined as disproportionate control over valuable resources in some setting or context (e.g., Fiske, 1993& Keltner, Gruenfeld, & Anderson, 2003). Specifically, power comprises two distinct facets: the capacity to control other individuals or resources as well as an independence from the control or authority of other individuals (Galinsky, Magee, Gruenfeld, Whitson, & Linjenquist, 2008). This independence most likely underpins the observation that individuals who experience a sense of power are sometimes less constrained by social norms, and thus more creative as well as often insensitive.

Sassenberg, Ellemers, and Scheepers (2012) distinguished two conceptualizations of power. First, people sometimes regard power as an opportunity to fulfill their aspirations. Second, people sometimes regard power as a responsibility to act appropriately and to fulfill the needs of other individuals. Unsurprisingly, if people conceptualize power as an opportunity to fulfill their aspirations, they are especially motivated to seek power.”

Orgone Energy: Everything You Need to Know

by Tiny Rituals

“In order to change Dead Orgone Energy and its destruction into something that could help and heal, Dr [Wilhelm] Reich created two inventions at first – the Orgone Accumulator and the Cloudbuster.

The Orgone Energy Accumulator was a wooden cupboard lined with metal, cotton, and steel wool. Reich believed that the organic materials layered within the box would absorb Orgone Energy and hold it there (similar to how a greenhouse works with heat)…

The other invention, the Cloudbuster was more geared towards discoveries of the environment and Orgone Energy. He knew that the presence of energy in the world had an impact on the atmosphere and that also fed into cloud formation. Reich believed that clouds and moisture and energy all had a direct impact on our climate and in his efforts to harness that energy, he invented the Cloudbuster. Like a vacuum cleaner, the Cloudbuster was pointed towards a sky that was fat and full of clouds. The energy that is holding the clouds together (often water) is dissipated and the cloud becomes no more. James DeMeo picked up this work in the 1970s using an Orgone Chamber and his research confirmed the theory behind Reich’s initial work.”

Who Were the Hebrews?

Who Were the Hebrews?

by Gerald A. Larue, Jewish Virtual Library

“According to biblical tradition, the Hebrews are peoples descended from Shem, one of Noah’s sons, through Eber, the eponymous ancestor, and Abraham. Gen. 7:22 f., reports that the flood destroyed all life except that in Noah’s ark; consequently, the whole human family descended from Noah and his sons: Japheth, Ham and Shem. As yet, not all of the names of eponymous ancestors in the family lines can be identified, but some probabilities are listed in Chart 6.

With Abraham the story of the Hebrews begins, and it is clearly stated that Hebrew origins lay outside Canaan. The summons to leave his ancestral home and journey to Canaan is accompanied by a promise (Gen. 12:2) that becomes a submotif in patriarchal accounts, re-appearing again and again (cf. Gen. 13:14 f., 15:5 f., 18:10, 22:17, 26:24, 28:13 f., 32:12 f., 35:9 ff., 48:16), finally taking covenantal form (Gen. 17:14 ff.)…The promise of blessing signified the unique and particularistic bond between Yahweh and his followers, so that the enemies of Abraham or the nation were enemies of Yahweh, and those befriending Abraham and/or the nation would be blessed.”

The Prophecy Club

“There is nothing else like The Prophecy Club among modern day ministries!  We exist to proclaim the end time prophetic warning:

To warn America that judgment is set, and has now begun.
To warn the world that we are in the last days spoken of in the Bible.

In June 1993, a local Christian radio station in Topeka, Kansas, suggested to Stan Johnson that he present a 15-minute daily broadcast on Bible prophecy. Stan, who for the past 22 years had been in sales and had been an instructor for the last 13 years, accepted the offer. He began by playing excerpts from nationally recognized Bible prophecy experts. The Prophecy Club program gained popularity quickly and soon expanded to a 30-minute broadcast. In September that year, Stan left his full-time job to devote himself to developing The Prophecy Club.

The objectives of The Prophecy Club were — and still are — simple yet vital to the body of Christ:

  • To make Christians more aware of the evil devices of Satan
  • To warn Christians that judgment is coming to America
  • To challenge God’s people to stop sinning and turn to Jesus with all their heart
  • To be an information source on current events in Bible prophecy”

Demons in Christian Thought

by Gregory D. Wiebe, Oxford Classical Dictionary

“Demons were widely thought to have aerial bodies, which allowed them to perform various marvels, like foretelling the future. They were ultimately taken to be fallen angels with Satan as their leader, though this was not a given early in the tradition. While the Christian understanding was that Christ had defeated them on the cross, this was not taken to preclude the ongoing influence of demons in human affairs prior to the final judgement. Indeed, they constituted a significant moral problem for the Christian life, which absolutely opposed them. For Christians, Christ and the demons were the two sides of the fundamental dilemma of every human soul. The problem of demons manifested differently depending on the context, whether in its encounter with false religion, from idolatry to the persecutions the gods inspired; or in the innumerable tempting thoughts encountered in the pursuit of ascetic discipline.”

The first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Recursive patterns in online echo chambers

by Emanuele B., Matteo C., Walter Q., Antonio S., scientific reports

“Through a thorough quantitative analysis we approach connectivity patterns of 1.2 M Facebook users engaged with two very conflicting narratives: scientific and conspiracy news.

Analyzing such data, we quantitatively investigate the effect of two mechanisms (namely challenge avoidance and reinforcement seeking) behind confirmation bias, one of the major drivers of human behavior in social media. We find that challenge avoidance mechanism triggers the emergence of two distinct and polarized groups of users (i.e., echo chambers) who also tend to be surrounded by friends having similar systems of beliefs. Through a network based approach, we show how the reinforcement seeking mechanism limits the influence of neighbors and primarily drives the selection and diffusion of contents even among like-minded users, thus fostering the formation of highly polarized sub-clusters within the same echo chamber.”

Exploring the CULT in culture

by Ivan Tyrrell, Human Givens Institute

“A CULT is most commonly thought of as a religious or utopian group with a charismatic leader, though not all cult leaders are charismatic.  Such groups can do a lot of damage causing anything from the breaking up of families to horrific acts of ritual murder, mass suicide and terrorist acts (Jonestown … Waco … 9/11).  Some cult members exhibit obviously bizarre behaviour and wear strange clothes.  Yet most cult behaviour is only a slightly more extreme form of the normal cultural behaviour that we are steeped in from childhood — for example, peer group pressure to conform.

[Dr. Arthur] Deikman noted that the desires that bring people to cults — including the need to feel secure and protected — are universal human longings (as we would say, human givens).  Their effect in our daily lives can be shockingly similar to the effect they have within the most bizarre cults, propelling people to take self destructive paths toward the security they seek, to fail to think realistically, suppress healthy dissent and autonomy, devalue outsiders and accept authoritarianism.”
